It’s no secret that many cosmetic products are loaded with potentially unsafe ingredients that can have a lasting impact on users and the environment. The level of awareness among consumers has all of us constantly asking whether the products we use are safe and whether they contain any ingredients that might harm us or those around us. Many chemicals that have historically been found in some personal care products are skin irritants, endocrine disruptors, or carcinogens.
Out of all the potentially harmful chemicals out there, there are 10 you should highly avoid. Parabens and phthalates, for instance, have been found to be endocrine disruptors linked to increased risk of breast cancer. A recent study led by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, revealed that when young girls stopped the use of shampoos and lotions made with potentially hormone disrupting ingredients, the levels of those chemical detected in participant blood samples dropped significantly.
While some cosmetic companies are being forced to address unsafe ingredients by reformulating products, Moxie has been committed from the start to never use harmful ingredients or anything that has not been proven safe. All Moxie products are clinically tested for safety and use only the finest ingredients to deliver the best results.
In the U.S., regulations are moving in the direction of standardizing safety in personal care products. In May of 2017, Dianne Feinstein, (D-California), and Susan Collins (R-Maine) introduced the Personal Care Products Safety Act to protect consumer’s health and create uniform safety rules for companies by strengthening the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) authority to regulate the ingredients in personal care products. The bill was supported by a wide range of companies and consumer groups as an indication that the safety of personal care products is a priority for consumers.
“Americans use a variety of personal care products daily, and they should be able to know whether the products that they are applying to their hair or skin are safe," said Senator Collins. “By updating FDA oversight of the ingredients in cosmetics and personal care products for the first time in nearly 80 years, our legislation will help increase safety for consumers, protect small businesses, and provide regulatory certainty for manufacturers.”
“Our skin is our largest organ, and many ingredients contained in these products–whether it be lotion, shampoo, or deodorant–are quickly absorbed by the skin,” Feinstein said in her testimony to the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee. “There is increasing evidence that certain ingredients in personal care products are linked to a range of health concerns, ranging from reproductive issues, such as fertility problems and miscarriage, to cancer.”
